REVIEW OF THE WEEK

I think your book is very good because it has cartoons added and words and you only get them in nursery and years five downwards. Normal books have just the words, which is soo boring. Also, me and my friends loved it as I don’t  really read books, it made me read it more. It helps you to remember things because of the colour and the pictures. I thought it was very fascinating.  I first found out about PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN because my friend was in library doing her homework and I saw this massive book and it looked really good. I have passed the PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN to five people already and they have said it was brilliant!!!  I would give it 9.5/10!!!

It was a great book to read and I hope more books come out in our generation. It is very eye catching and the cover is soo good!! There are sooo many pages I like, but here are a few I like. Page 30&31 on Fearless female fighters and page 192 &193 on how to make this outfit height of fashion. It is like a magazine rolled into one!!! I soo love!! I want to be a fashion designer, so it really helps to guide me the right way as I am almost near my option year. I really loved it and I hope others will do too!! I really didn’t know that they take away some of your spots and things that made you look not that good to absolutely flawless on your face or body on the computer!! That is really amazing!!

Alisha, year 9

An iPod shuffle will be winging its way to you soon!

First of all I would comment on the brilliant front cover. The 3D effect is really eye-catching! It is very colourful too.

The way that on the first page there is a diagram showing how everything is connected is a good idea. It helps you to understand. The first chapter on nature and animals is really interesting. The page on dinosaurs with the “Scariest Dinosaur that Ever Lived” is very clever.

Next the section about your body and your brain is very interesting. It covers things you might come across in R.E. (philosophy) and science (biology). Then there is a section on technology and history. This part (especially using cartoons) is cool.

The few pages on art and colour are good. I like the two pages with four coloured dots on that show that when they are mixed they can create such a rainbow.

A few pages after that there is a cartoon town which is a good idea because children of all ages like pictures. I like the pages on how cameras and magazines can lie and how they change one photo into something that they think would please the person looking at them more. It’s very interesting. The “Odd One Out’s” that are dotted around throughout the book are brill.

The index at the back of the book is really useful for finding the precise pages that you want to look at. I love dolphins and when I looked for them in the index I found plenty of useful information on the subject.

All in all, I think that this encyclopaedia is really good and that it will come in really useful during my time at this school.

Emma, Brace Secondary School Science College

I think the front cover is really interesting and cool because its 3D and sticks out at you, it also makes you want to pick it up straight away and read it. When I first saw it I thought that is was going to be like a normal encyclopedia but as soon as I opened it I realised it was an encyclopedia but with a difference.

It is amazingly done so that children find it interesting and will read it and gather information from pictures. It is easy to find the information you want in it. It is 0% boring because on each page it has drawings and diagrams in loads and loads of different colours. Nearly every unusual question you want to know is in this book and is answered in a way that is really understandable like Why do we smile? It is useful for people doing there homework and if they are bored and want to read a book they just pick up PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN! I also think this book will encourage children to read.

It has more information than an ordinary encyclopedia so complicated questions make more sense and are interesting, all in all I’m saying that PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN is an amazing and really fabulous book.

George, John Cabot City Technology College

I think “PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN” is a fab book the front cover is great and I like the way you’ve made it look 3d. Inside the book it has a page where it shows you how to use the book which I think is really good. If you want to know anything it has letters A-Z and on the pictures it tells you lots of information about that picture.

The contents is very good it has sections about your body, planet earth and many other things, it helps people a lot if it has sections because otherwise you have to search the whole book just for the thing you want to look up on. It tells us lots of things about our body which is very interesting if someone wants to find out about the different parts of the body.

Shannen, Meole Brace Senior School

What a cover! Very eye- catching and clever. Even the title suggests to pick it up and read it.

A very easy book to navigate through, always having different references for different pages. Its nice to just dive in anywhere and to be able to follow your instinct by following the page references. For example I was reading about Why you smile and then I saw a reference to celebrities so I went there and did the celebrity test which was very enjoyable and also very unexpected. It feels as though you are flowing through the book just following what you like.
The down side of this book is as I try and write my review flicking through the book I have to keep stopping to read bits of it and mum says I have to have it finished by tea time!  Even my mum got caught up in the catchy titles and headings, which proves that it can entertain anyone of any age.

I think that The writers of the book tried to squash too much in and so consequently the writing is tiny and your eyes hurt after reading half an hour of tiny writing. My opinion is it’s very good as far as non fiction books go, but honestly I'd prefer to have a big bar of chocolate for Christmas. I give this book two thumbs up.

I have enjoyed your encyclopaedia and so have many of my friends and family. The best part of it would be the front cover; I think that it would increase your chances of people wanting to read it. My favourite page was the female fighters page because it showed that women are as strong as men and that we have equivalent rights to do the same things. Also I enjoyed the book because it had something for everyone to read such as industrial objects, fashion and nature. Furthermore I enjoyed the book because it was not only attractive on the outside but it was attractive on the inside which meant that it was an attractive book altogether. Over all I was quite an impressive book and I believe that it will do and sell well in the future.

Esther, Woodley Primary

I really liked this book because it had many interesting facts in it. These are some of my favourites:

Did you know that Mandarin Chinese is the most populated language in the world, with a staggering 885 million speakers?

A picture was split in half. One half was in colour; the other was in black and white. Which half would you expect to have the most colour. Exactly, the coloured half. If you said that, you’d be wrong!

In the book, it gave you a chart of when some foods were first invented. Did you know that popcorn was invented in 3000BC?

Did you know, the five most dangerous pieces of litter are:

Plastic Carrier Bags:
If left floating in the ocean, sea turtles mistake them for their favourite food-Jellyfish. They swallow the bag, then suffocate, choke or starve.
Supermarket Trolleys:
Believe it or not, farm animals and wildlife are often found stuck in them and badly injured. (That’s before they’ve been packaged and put on supermarket shelves.)
Six Pack Rings (Plastic that holds cans together):
These cause around six million seabird deaths and more than 100,000 sea mammal deaths annually. The plastic takes 450 years to decompose.
Polystyrene:
Animals mistake the material (used for deposable cups or protective parts of boxes) for food. It clogs up their stomachs and poisons them. Polystyrene never fully decomposes.
Dog Poo:
This is animal litter and it’s dangerous to us humans. The toxocara canis roundworm is found in 50% of dog droppings. It can cause a dangerous infection. Watch where you tread.

102 is the smallest number with three different digits.

Becky, Peters-Woodley Primary School

The book “PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN” was a great book. The way that I like to use it was look at the contents, flick through the pages until I get to the page, then read. But if I see a word or subject that sounds interesting that has got a page number next to it, I look for it and go to something different. I liked all of the book which I seen except there one thing that I don’t really like. If someone is researching ( e.g. for homework ) they might see a page number and read that and go completely of the homework subject. I think this book would be great for the library for people to get information from.

I think PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN is all about what is on the front cover (stuff you need to know)
PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN has every thing you want to know from A-Z like the life cycles, men, women and many more .This book also tell you how to be something E.G If a girl wants to try to be a boy or a boy to be a girl. Also they have put in this book the effects of drugs, wars, sex, pubtey and smoking all in all this book is all about the front cover.

When I first got the book PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN the cover was amazing, but when I opened it up there were lots of pictures on every page.
If you wanted to look at plants you just need to go to the index and find it.  Once you get there the page will give you on the left hand corner what it will be telling you about.
If you can’t find an encyclopaedia for anything you are looking for, the smashing book PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN is the one for you.

I like the PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN book because it is educational and is humorous, and has funny little pictures.  The facts are very interesting facts and the humour makes you want to read more.  The subtitles stand out.  There are also maps which are interesting because they are colour coded with a key and timelines and graphs.

There are also lots of interesting questions that just make you want to know the answer to them.  It has information on nearly everything although it could be a little more compact so you could take it around with you, so you could read it on the bus and all sorts of public transport.

Joshua, Year 6
West Moors Middle School

I think the book gives you a lot of information; however the information is dotted all about.  Some information is hard to find amongst all the irrelevant information on the page.  The front page also hurts your eyes.

Karl, Year 8
West Moors Middle School

The PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN book is  a colourful and animated children’s encyclopaedia .  We think that it would appeal to a range of people.  We also think that the subtitles are necessary for this type of book as people may get confused when swapping page to page.

This book is very factual and interesting but could be slightly clearer in some aspects.  We feel the diagrams are well coloured and labelled so that younger readers are able to understand.

Josh & Luke Year 8

I really like the 3D cover as it is eye catching with lots to look at and it’s funny.

I like the fact that when you turn the cover it is not all in your face – but well spread out.

I like the chatty ways it is written and it is easy to find things.  I did some tests trying to find information on different things and each time I could easily find them, even fleas!  I also found out something new about electricity and Iam a level 5 Science.

Keller Holland – Year 7
West Moors Middle School

In my opinion, I thought the book was extremely well-presented. I liked the book very much and it has a fantastic cover. I especially like the 3D cover on the front; it made it look ‘eye-catching’. The book overall was a great success and was filled with much information that I never knew before. It had many facts and because each page was colourful and interesting in its own way it made it even better to pick up and have a read through.

The book held lots of valuable information about various subjects and it explained each subject and singular fact with great enthusiasm… I would give the book a rating of 9 ½ because it was quite a knowledgeable and well put-together book and I liked it a lot. They made boring knowledge books into something fun! They made it interesting for children to enjoy as well as adults and they made it possible for people to learn many facts without getting bored of any of them!! This is a great result for the book itself!

When I first saw the book I thought "wicked" and I wanted to open it straight away! The cover was colourful and eye catching and I needed to touch and feel it. I think it is a great book because it has games and activities and is funny. I personally think that kids from all over will love this. I say it's a terrific and eye catching book. I read lots of books but this is the most colourful it's the best book I’ve ever read.

This book has a brilliant front cover and is full of good information.

Who says learning isn’t fun?  This book certainly disagrees! This encyclopaedia brings facts to life with games and funny facts. The linking to other pages helps guide you through the book. You could start at Egyptians and end up at Apples!!! And check out the cover, it’s so cool but not as cool as the information inside!
Colleen, age13
Cumnock Academy

The book was full of strange and interesting things. I think the front cover is awesome. However it is a bit too thick and heavy, but now I have big muscles. I have read the book every other day (when year 8s are allowed in the library). In conclusion I think the book is very good and I have read none like it.

James
Hall Cross Lower School

I think that this book is great because it provides lots of information including dinosaurs and the human brain. I was interested in the human brain and it taught me what the human brain does. I would love to have this book in our library permanently. It would provide me with lots of information for my homework in the near future.

Drew, Year 9
Cardinal Allen High School Fleetwood

I think that the PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN book is going to be one of the best books in the world. (No doubt about that) With 350 pages of packed information including information about the world, how to do things like voting, elections and lots of awesome information. The book is a really good book because it shows you how to live your lifetime as children, like me, grow older. It also can teach children if they have homework. I think the front cover is very attractive and would make lots of people buy it. I like the astronaut the most.

David, aged 12

The cover is well cool!

Annie
Lady Hawkins School

A good thing about this book is that it has a lot of illustrations and gives a good idea of how everything is. Another thing is the book has a lot of jokes and a good sense of humour put into the information.

The book reveals a lot of tricks and conspiracies of what could have or haven’t happened. Sometimes drawn pictures look a bit childish. The book has a little about a lot and just a small insight of what something is about just to make you go and look into it further.

Kaloyan, Year 10
Rokeby School, London

I think the book is in my own words coolicus, which means cool. The front cover is well cool with all the holograms. The information is useful and appealing to people at secondary school.

Calum, aged 11

I liked the book because it is really funny and I really liked the faces on page 30-31 (the faces) it' s been designed really well for our age – excellent.

Jacob, Year 7
Oakwood Park Grammer School

The PICK ME UP PUT ME DOWN book is a great book. I think lots of children will read it because it’s colourful. It has lots of pictures and interesting facts. This book mostly tells you everything you need to know about everything. The way it’s set out makes it accessible to all ages making it a good book for a secondary school library.
