Dominated for 900 years by neighboring Hungary, Slovakia spent much of the 20th century as the less developed half of communist Czechoslovakia. An independent democracy since 1993, Slovakia has struggled to create a modern market-led economy, but was among the ten countries which joined the EU in its major eastward expansion in 2004.
