'Great book, it takes you through the causes, formation & aftermath of WWII, through great illustrations. The high points of this book are the timeline based event charts, maps and section covering the details of war memorials. I think this book is a must have for any history fan and especially for WWII details. I would be more delighted if some more details/pages had been given on the Asia-Pacific war and if the text size was bigger.'

'This book comprehensively covers all aspects of World War 2, from the political undercurrents behind the posturing of the various countries involved, to the human element and the effects of the war on the person in the street. Along with the in depth chapters, it is packed with superb photographs and illustrations, which means that the book has appeal to a range of ages within a family. One down side is the text size, it is very small so does not make for bedtime reading. Recommended.'

'This superbly illustrated volume not only gives a comprehensive guide to the war years but also provides context by exploring both the causes and the aftermath of the conflict.Multiple timelines allow comparisons between different theatres at each key period and these are complemented by clearly labelled maps. Social history is strongly featured in both the texts and the photographs, and there are frequent quotes from participants at all levels. Short chapters encourage browsing, and the many haunting pictures engage readers of any age every time the book is opened. These photographs ensure that readers never lose sight of the war''s human dimension, and ultimately this is the book''s greatest strength.'

'This extensively informative book will help to strengthen your knowledge, teach you new facts, statistics and trivia and is beautifully illustrated with emotive, poignant photographs. It begins by describing the reasons for WW2 following the aftermath of WW1 and has timelines covering each Country''s involvement up to and during WW2. There is even a section about Wartime Cinema and a really useful comprehensive guide to the location of the numerous Battlefields. Everybody should read this fascinating historical book.'

'Well set out with superb illustration and photographs as one would expect from DK. Comprehensive(the true meaning of WORLD War is only too apparent) coverage even down to details of fashion in pre-war Japan. The timelines help to give focus to how events unfolded. Overall more than enough detail to get a grasp of events and to provide the impetus to find out more.'

'This is a well laid out and fascinating book giving a clear and concise overview of all the theatres of WW2. This book lets you examine the bigger picture of the war, which you can use as a trigger for further research and in depth analysis from more specialised resources. The photographs are amazing and some harrowing, the maps are clear and easy to follow. I particularly liked the timelines which clearly show the sequence of events. In Memoriam is a unique and fitting end to a wonderful book that should appeal to all generations.'

'A fantastic compilation of research on Word War II photographic archives and factual material. It is an encylopaedic study. Wonderfully easy to use as probably the best pictorial & written reference yet published in the DK style. Everything you need to know is included. Timelines & map references are superb. A host of hitherto unpublished pictures, gives the reader a good idea of what it is all about, the shocking number of deaths & the horror of war. Ideal for all the family, for those with memories & for the young to learn more. Having been on a convoy in the war, it brings it all back to me, very vividly.'
