'This is a fantastic educational resource on what is music and includes a great sweep of coverage from early music to international music to different styles of music while highlighting different composers, musicians and instruments. The CD tracks have been well chosen, and would be great to use with a class - and are well signposted throughout the book.'

'The Children’s Book Of Music shows loads of different types of music and tells you all about each one. However, some of the tracks on the CD that comes with it could do with being a bit longer as otherwise you don’t have time to read the relevant information.
It also gives you background information about when various kinds of music were popular all around the world. The layout is bright and colourful and busy, and that makes it quite easy to absorb information on the pages. There are lots of different, linked sections, but no section is too long. I like discovering the various instruments that are used on the CD tracks; quite often, they are not the instruments you’d expect!
This book makes me want to learn a few more instruments!!

'The Children''s Book of Music was sent to me by the DK bookbusters. Its intention is to get children to like, listen to and play music to its fullest extent, and I think it did this very well.
There are three parts of this book. One is called Early Music, another is called Classical Music, and the last is called Modern Music.
A CD comes with the book and this gives you a taste of music not only from our century but also from a long forgotten time.
I enjoyed the CD. Dad gave us a quiz with it. He played the CD and asked us where we thought the music came from. There was music from Japan, China, India, South America and Russia. I liked the Russian best.
The book told you about instruments and also composers and musicians through history. The bit about the Beatles was great! '

'I really enjoyed the book and listening to the CD.
The best page was seeing the map of the Orchestra as it helped me with my school work. The pictures were clear and not too big but I found some of the writing quite small. I liked the way the pages told you which track on the CD to listen to. This is a really good book to have if you are interested in music like me. '

'This book is the most concise on music, designed and written for children in mind. It is easy for children to read and understand with the rich illustrations. As an adult I am fascinated by its contents. There is an accompanying CD and its practicality is second to none. If you are after a book about music in general for your children I whole heartedly recommend this one. Dorling Kindersley come up trumps again in this area.'

'An excellent, informative book suitable for children from ages 7 - 11 years old. Looks at various musicians throughout the ages and tells you in depth about music and traditions in other cultures. A very colourful book and it is set out in an easy to read layout. The CD inserted into the front cover is fantastic - very interactive with lots of exciting activities suitable for children. If your child loves music or plays an instrument, put this on your Christmas list to buy for them.'

'This book is delightful and educational. Every page has something new and exiting to urge children to keep reading. The layout has just the right amount of written facts and pictures so that younger children can still enjoy the book and learning about instruments/types of music. The CD means that this is an excellent buy which appeals to all types of learners; there are pages describing types of music from all over the world and double page spreads of types of instruments (e.g. string). I am training to be a primary teacher and I wouldn''t hesitate to use this as a learning aid in one of my lessons; it is not only musical but cultural and historical. '

'This is a beautifully illustrated book, with short, easy to read words and close-up photos of many musical instruments. A child who can''t read will enjoy the pictures; one who can read on his own will enjoy finding out all the interesting facts about music on their own. A thoroughly wonderful book for children and adults alike.'

'This is a very clear and concise look at music, in all its guises, which children will easily understand. It covers the way in which instruments were derived right up to their present day usage. Many composers and their styles are highlighted, explaining how they captured various historical and religious stories in music. Opera and ballet are also discussed in an easy and understandable way. Children will love the colourful and informative manner in which this book is set out. All in all, a wonderful look at the world of music which will keep a child enthralled for hours.'
