Richard Chapman
| Richard Chapman is widely recognised as one of the leading figures in the guitar world and an authority on the history of the guitar and its music |
His own love affair with the guitar started when he was 11 when he was inspired by modern and avant-garde jazz and classical musicians as well as the pop and rock developments of the 1960's. Self-taught, his path to mastering the guitar was not a smooth one. He grew up in a village in Kent which he describes as "a cultural wasteland" and belonged to a family "in which music-making was seen as dangerous and subversive". In fact, when he was 14, his father destroyed and burnt all his music and instruments. An act which only persuaded Richard to try harder to succeed. On his musical journey of discovery with the guitar, he was to find that guitar music had often been produced by people who had had a difficult time in the world.
Since he left school at 15, Richard has combined being a professional musician, with his own approach to teaching guitar. He has also been guitar, jazz and popular music consultant at Christie's, during which time he wrote the catalogue for the famous sale of Eric Clapton's guitar collection. Richard Chapman is the author of DK's international bestseller The Complete Guitarist and has often appeared on TV and radio. He is currently recording a solo CD for his work to be titled Twelve Colours.
